PRANAYAMA WORKSHOPS
HARNESS THE VITAL FORCE THROUGH YOUR BREATH
Pranayama Workshop: The Breath Beyond the Mat
In the West, yoga is often seen as a workout—a series of flowing postures that strengthen the body and increase flexibility. While the physical practice of yoga (asana) is important, it is only one aspect of this ancient tradition. Beyond the mat, yoga offers a vast and transformative system of practices designed to cultivate balance, awareness, and inner peace. One of the most powerful yet often overlooked aspects of yoga is pranayama—the practice of conscious breath control.
What is Pranayama?
Pranayama, derived from the Sanskrit words prana (life force) and ayama (expansion or control), is the art of working with the breath to regulate energy in the body and mind. Through specific breathing
techniques, pranayama helps to calm the nervous system, enhance mental clarity, and prepare the practitioner for deeper states of meditation.
The Breath and the Eight Limbs of Yoga
Pranayama is one of the Eight Limbs of Yoga, as outlined in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. These eight limbs provide a roadmap for a holistic yogic life, guiding practitioners beyond physical postures towards a state of spiritual realization. The eight limbs are:
Yama – Ethical disciplines
Niyama – Personal observances
Asana – Physical postures
Pranayama – Breath control
Pratyahara – Withdrawal of the senses
Dharana – Concentration
Dhyana – Meditation
Samadhi – Enlightenment or bliss
While asana prepares the body, pranayama serves as a bridge between the physical and the subtle, drawing the practitioner inward towards meditation and self-awareness.
